Remains of the Data – Protect Your Identity

TOP DEALS ON XBOX 360 DEALS

In the wrong hands, it’s just as easy for a thief to recover data off your old, discarded hard drive as it is to unravel and read a crumpled piece of paper that you’ve tossed in the garbage. Geek savvy crooks know just how to access the dark corners of your trusty old computer and this can place your identity at risk.

Shredding paper, smashing up CDs, DVDs or USB flash drives that contain any sort of personal or business information is an obvious and simple step to take when discarding any media. But what do you do with your hard drive once you decide to replace it?

Most of your stored data may be trivial or of no concern. No one usually cares very much about your photos, old to-do lists or the kid’s video games. But if your hard drive stores archived email, financial documents, tax records, passwords, account numbers or medical records, then don’t just give it away. Be aware that your personal information can be easily retrieved and used to hijack your identity.

Once a fraudster has enough vital information, they may attempt to transfer your bank accounts, change billing addresses, or apply for new credit cards and often, with surprising success. So it’s more important than ever that you erase or destroy your obsolete hard drive. But how?

There isn’t a portable shredder on the market that you can run your old hard drive through. And just erasing all important files won’t do the trick. There are programs that will un-erase these files and bring them right back.

There are options that promise to cleanse a disk drive using wiping software. There are also destruction services and manufacturers’ recycling programs. But what many PC owners don’t realize, according to some experts, is that many of these options are not 100% reliable.

Your hard drive maintains an index of files used to organise the data on your computer by telling it where things are stored. When you install any file – especially a large one – the information for that file is scattered around the hard drive in bits and pieces. When you request to open the file, the hard drive checks the index first and then it gathers the fragmented pieces and reconstructs them to open the file.

If you later delete the same file, the links between the index and the file disappear telling your system that the file is no longer needed. But the deleted file actually remains on your computer. Even if you’ve taken care to cleanse and overwrite your drive, remnants of data will still exist.

If you have your drive overwritten, you are replacing previously stored data with a predetermined pattern of gibberish. You can find countless brands of software that claim a lofty standard of data erasure and they all work on the same premise of overwriting the drive with bad data. The goal is to effectively render the good data unrecoverable. If you go this route, it’s time consuming but smart to overwrite your disk several times for greater protection.

Here’s the Problem:

Your computer’s operating system may tell you that the data is gone, but the pattern of 1’s and 0’s will still be on your machine – it’s just been overwritten. Skilful hackers can decode this information back into human, readable language. It may only take a modestly resourceful cyber crook with a good shareware program to be able to recover your personal information.

Taking the step of formatting the drive helps to remove patterns but, many format programs still cannot erase the full pattern, only its file system pointer chain. Some commercial devices are available that will thoroughly remove any trace of patterns that could be decoded into information. They perform a low-level format and this should permanently erase the data. Nonetheless, recovery measures are sometimes still possible.

A low level format may not do the trick so you can consider a “degaussing” service. Degaussing is the technical term for de-magnetization and it is considered to be a more secure measure of data erasure. You’ll often read warnings not to get a magnet near your hard drive for fear of losing your data. Degaussing is a process of placing a very strong magnet next to the hard drive so that it no longer holds any information. Still, the process may not purge the disk completely which means some remnants of information may remain recoverable.

Physical destruction is the most reliable method of all to guard against having your information and identity stolen from your old PC. If you’ve used the computer for some time or if you’ve been using it extensively for personal or business use, this is the way to go. And it can be a do-it-yourself project that can be kinda fun.

On the other hand, drives are designed to be robust and most can withstand being mishandled or even dropped, so you may not want to do the destruction yourself. After you unplug the computer wires, you’ll need to remove any mounting screws and slide the hard drive out from the back of its casing. Use a hammer to smash the hard disk platters or even try an acetylene torch to complete the destruction.

If you don’t have the tools or the inclination to do the job properly, you can always hire a hard drive destruction service. Just Google terms like “hard drive destruction service” or “clean out your hard disk” and you’ll find a ton of information and resources that may lead you to a good service close to home.

If your data is confidential, it’s worth the effort to ensure that it stays that way as a measure of identity protection. So before you leave that old clunky Pentium by the curb side, you should take some time to research your best alternative and then decide to save, sell, recycle or destroy that old PC or Notebook.

Information Card Foundation and How it Can Protect You on Line

TOP DEALS ON XBOX 360 DEALS

Identity theft is a criminal activity that continues to inconvenience online users and, taken to its extremes, it can cause financial disaster to its innocent victims. Several different means exist to help individuals avoid identity theft but no matter how careful a person might be to protect their identity, these internet security problems continue unabated and identity thieves continue to look for ways to outsmart the typical consumer. But there are ways that consumers can remain ahead in the identity theft game and one organization that is ready to help is the Information Card Foundation: A non- profit organization dedicated to reducing the instance of identity theft by securing digital identities in place of traditional logons and passwords. Steering members of the foundation include representatives from Google, Microsoft, PayPal, Oracle Novell and Equifax.

How Does This System Protect the Consumer?

The Information Card Foundation has devised a unique system that protects the consumer by eliminating the need for a logon and password, thereby removing personal information from a web site. It achieves its goal by mimicking the electronic code that is used with debit cards, credit cards, and driver’s licenses, replacing the code with a digital information card. This digital “card” contains the individual’s personal information and each individual will be required to carry several different cards: one for each secured web site that the individual uses.

At present, most all web sites require the establishment of an account by setting up a user name and password. This method is simple, but it isn’t very secure, as any identity thief will point out. All that is necessary to get this personal information is for the identity thief to hack the web sites system and tap into the database containing usernames and passwords. With digital cards, the identity thief is stopped quickly in his/her tracks because these cards are not linked to a web site. Since they are not linked, they are not part of the web site’s database so if a thief successfully hacks a web site, the person who uses these digital cards will not exist in the records.

How Does This Work?

Digital cards are a unique service and they are the key behind the success of this system. Each individual who uses this system must setup a separate digital card for each web site commonly used. These digital cards are then stored on an individual’s personal computer, either in its browser, on the desktop, or on a mobile device. When an individual decides to make an online purchase or enter into a secured site for some other reason, all he/she has to do is click the I- card link within the web site. The individual can then logon without the need for a logon id or password.

What are the Pros and Cons?

The system offered by the Information Card Foundation offers plenty of reasons to consider using it and chief among these is the direct protection against identity theft and phishing. There are many who would like to use the internet for online purchasing, conducting banking transactions, etc., but they avoid using this modern technology because they fear having their identities stolen. With this system, the need for inputting personal information into a web site is eliminated, greatly reducing the chances for the occurrence of identity theft. As a side benefit, this system also eliminates the need to memorize logon ids and passwords.

Even though this system offers great protection against identity theft and phishing, it still has a few issues that prevent it from achieving the level of greatness of which it is capable. The greatest problem with this system is that it only works if the web used by the consumer is participating in the digital card system and accepts I- Cards. If this affiliation is not present, then the digital card is useless. As more and more web sites accept I- Cards, this system will become more and more useful, but until that time, digital cards have limited use.

How Can I Obtain and Install This Service?

The Information Card Foundation offers easy installation of its system. To initiate the setup, a person must establish an Identity Selector on his/her pc. This is usually already available because it often exists on some pc browsers. If it isn’t in the browser, it should be searched for on the computer desktop. Once the identity selector is located, the next step is to setup your own digital cards for use at specific internet web sites. After completing this step, the Information Card Foundation’s system will be installed and ready for use. When a web site is accessed, it will no longer ask for a logon id and password.

Identity theft continues to cause problems for millions of consumers each year but, fortunately, there are many effective software products designed to help stop identity theft before it begins. The Information Card Foundation has devised a very effective means to eliminate or greatly reduce the incidence of identity theft and phishing with its system of digital cards. These cards help protect consumers by eliminating the need for logon ids and passwords, keeping personal information private and well out of reach of cyber- thieves everywhere. It’s a very good product for consumers who worry about shopping or conducting other transactions online.

Each and everyone of our features is designed to facilitate and enhance your ability to protect your child more than the average pc spy software by doing all of the following:

Read every email – letting you read all emails they send or receive can offer great insight into what your child is doing, what they are planning to do, and what they are thinking. This information sometimes can help you intercept them before they execute an idea, or better yet, give you ideas on what to communicate to your child about to foster a healthier relationship.

See every Instant Message or Chat – giving you access to all of their IM conversations can be of a great help. Similar to email, this information can give you insight into what your son or daughter is thinking about, letting you get more involved in what is happening in their life. As well, IM is prone to cyber bullying, giving you assuredness that your child won’t fall victim or participate in activities without you being aware and able to stop it.

See every webpage and how long they were there – giving records of the websites they visited and how long they were there for can be of great help towards protecting your kids. Be aware if your child is visiting inappropriate websites or if they are simply spending way too much time each day on social networking websites.

Block access to inappropriate websites – with the ability to block access to websites (even remotely and on the fly) you can be sure that when you leave your son or daughter alone at home they won’t be spending all that time going to websites they wouldn’t try with you around.

Capture every single keystroke – leaving no stone unturned, our key logger captures everything done on the computer. With no information left behind, you can and will become the expert on your kids and what is going on in their lives!

Limit access to software programs – having the ability to block certain programs or set schedules for use, you can be sure that your kids are only doing things on the computer you want them to. Don’t worry about coming home late from work to see that Billy has been sitting on a computer game since the moment he got home, because it won’t happen anymore.

Take screenshots – with even screenshots being taken, nothing will be unseen by your monitoring efforts, even graphics and videos viewed! Know exactly what your son or daughter has been looking at and watching on the computer and feel more secure about what they are doing.

Monitor laptops – having the ability to remotely control our software, you can monitor a laptop regardless of where it is or where it is going. Anywhere in the world you will be able to have monitoring capabilities about what is being done on the computer.

Alert Word system – proprietary filtering that lets you choose keywords and phrases that when used in any of the above forms of communication lets you know immediately, giving you the ability to pre-empt whatever your son or daughter is doing or thinking about doing.

Protect User’s Online Community For Free With Immunet

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Immunet Protect is a free cloud based security solution that uses the power of community to layer its protections. The software is meant to complement existing security if it is in place, or according to the company, can be run alone on a system. The Tech Herald downloaded a copy to give it a spin. With the testing complete, here are our results. The Immunet team has been hard at work for the past 9 months, building the next version of our free, fast and lightweight cloud-based antivirus product.

Common Windows security wisdom says it’s a bad idea to run multiple antivirus apps simultaneously. Generally that’s true, but Immunet 2.0 intends to play nice with your existing protection and bolster it with help from the cloud and the crowd. Immunet’s latest update introduces new scanning tools, detection engines, and support in a bid to persuade users that the program is the spackle they need to plug the holes in their security wall.

Installation and setup
The installation of Immunet 2.0 asks for registration, which you can skip to avoid sending your data up to the cloud without adversely affecting your security. However, the cloud based defenses work better as more people contribute their data. This is a common defense tool from security vendors. Immunet opts you in to the Ask toolbar and default search engine switch, so users who don’t want them should go through the install process carefully. Otherwise, the installation process is straightforward and simple.

Interface
The interface is a blue wall behind three columns that provide access to Community, Computer, and Product settings. On the far left side of the interface, Immunet quietly informs you of your other installed antivirus program, while on the far right there are two bars keeping track of CPU and memory usage. Annoyingly, much of the interface uses text that comes in varying shades of blue, which can make it harder to read than it should be. We also found that switching screens within Immunet, as well as tooltips, were slow to respond to clicks and mouse overs.

Features and support
Similar to PC Tools’ ThreatFire, which didn’t originally address virus related threats but does now, Immunet seeks to present a lightweight method to enhance already installed protection. On features alone, there’s no doubt that Immunet 2.0 is a better product than its predecessor. The free version offers a new cloud based detection engine called ETHOS, a heuristics engine that offers on-demand scanning, in product updates, a visual representation of the Immunet community, a silent gaming mode, and a stream from the Immunet security blog. There’s also an unusual amount of attention paid to user-support issues for a free program, with free 24-7 telephone support. The service includes installation problems, assistance with potential virus issues, and sluggish computer performance that may not be virus-related. E-mail support has been dropped from this version in favor of online forums. The new scanning tools come in the three standard flavors: the quick Flash scan, Full, and Custom. The Flash scan, which checks out only processes and the Registry, took just more than one minute to finish, while the full takes much longer because it checks your entire computer. Immunet doesn’t lock you into a running scan, so you can hide it and use other parts of the program. However, Immunet restricts rootkit scans to its paid upgrade, sacrificing some of your security.

Performance
During a day of anecdotal testing, we noticed no unusual system slow downs while running Immunet concurrently with Avast. Third party security performance benchmarks are not yet available, but it’s highly unusual when running multiple security programs not to see even slight anecdotal sluggishness. This suggests that at least on the performance front, Immunet does do all that it claims.

Using Immunet Protect
Usability wise, Immunet Protect offers a sleek interface with simple navigation. The main area to focus on is the Summary page. This is where you can see if Cloud Protection is active, as it is clearly marked with the symbols below. In addition, you can see the number of people connected to the cloud, as well as the number of threats that Immunet Protect is presently defending the system from. To the left on the Summary screen is the number of clean programs installed within the last two weeks. This will show both the clean and malicious ones. This related to the History tab, where an overview of scans and threat detections from a set timeframe are displayed with detailed information. The Scan tab is where on demand scans are launched, as well as where you can enable or disable the ability to scan running or loadpoint processes. On demand scans during testing would complete in under a minute on average, but never went past one minute seven seconds.

Does LiveProtection Protect Your PC?

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

LiveProtection is another fake application that claims to remove spyware.  This rogue security program advertises aggressively toward the user, using fake system notifications that alert you to supposed threats that are on your PC.  This rogue states that infections and threats exist on your computer in an effort to get you to download the scan they offer to detect these parasites.

Only after you download the scan to detect these threats are you informed that you have to buy the full product in order for these infections to be removed.  Don’t fall for it. This application is not able to scan your PC, so there is no way that it can detect or remove any threats.  Results of the scan are harmless files that are placed there to frighten you into buying the product.

How spyware gets installed on your PC

LiveProtection is actually spyware.  If you do find that it has been placed on your PC, you may wonder just how it got there.  If you did download the scan, it may have installed at that time.  Otherwise, malware usually installs without you even knowing it.  This can happen when you download other files you want, visit malicious websites, or click links in spam e-mails.  These applications are often bundled with files you download, such as music, videos or games.

What does malware do?

Malware is never good.  Most rogue security programs have the ability to follow what you do when you surf the Internet, such as the searches you perform and websites you visit.  Your private information may be at risk as well, as some can access passwords and online business data.  LiveProtection runs constantly in the background every time you log on to Windows, so it will make your PC run slow.

Signs that spyware is on your PC

Other than a slow running or unstable computer, there are other symptoms that will alert you to spyware.  Incessant pop-up ads and security warnings are a major sign, along with browser redirection or a changed home page.  You might also notice that new shortcuts have been placed on your desktop.

I have malware.  What should I do?

Malware can be removed manually, but doing it yourself is not recommended.  The process is difficult, and if it is not done right, your PC may be damaged.  The best solution is to use a reliable antispyware program that will remove it automatically, restoring security.
